shot an undercover police officer last night. the shooting happened on seminary avenue and 17st street not too far from oakland coliseum. police say there were three suspects. only one of them at this hour has been caught. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland this morning where she has the latest on this ongoing investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. i spoke with an oakland police sergeant and says as far as he knows the two suspects they have been looking for since last evening is still on. most of the door to door searching is over right now. they are looking for potential evidence focusing near an apartment building. you see the dark vehicle there is a s.w.a.t. vehicle. seminary behind crime scene tape this morning for three to four blocks after an undercover oakland police officer who was sitting in his car was accosted by three men around 6:30 last night. in the confrontation he ended up being shot in the arm. that set off a massive manhunt.

the neighborhood in lockdown. chp helicopters were brought in. one man as you said earlier was detained and a gun recovered at the scene. the officer actually had been in the area investigating a shooting. a life threatening shooting that happened on sunday. we're told that officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. i did ask the sergeant how long they might be out here and he said at this point he just doesn't know. we keep seeing them walking around with flashlights focusing on this one apartment building there. he says they are still looking for potential evidence. that's what we have from here reporting live from oakland, i'm christie smith, "today in the bay." the city council all set to meet tonight to talk about a plan to fight all of the violence like this thing going down. the man they have chosen is at the center of this generating a lot of controversy. looks like -- did we lose her? are you still there? the man generating this controversy. can you tell us why bratton is such a controversial figure?

>> reporter: you know, he had been the police chief in new york and l.a. and one of the policies that he supported was stop and frisk policy. a lot of people particularly here in oakland don't like that. they are saying at least at a public safety meeting held last week they think that will lead to racial profiling. at that public safety meeting the police chief in oakland spoke out in support of that and you could barely hear him. he was drown out by the boos from the crowd over this policy. it would be a $250,000 consulting contract they might give. the public safety committee said yes, we have to do something. violent crime up by 23% in oakland. again, this goes to the full city council and they have to make that decision on that tonight. >> all right. big decision featuring bill bratton. we'll check back in as the morning goes on. thank you. a special community meeting will be held today to talk about equipping some san francisco police officers with tasers. the chief wants to give about

100 officers the so-called stun guns and offering more training to dealing with mentally ill suspects. he made the proposal after an officer shot and killed a man carrying a box cutter last year. opponents of the plan say even though tasers are considered nonlethal, they can be deadly. san francisco is one of the only large departments in the entire country that does not allow officers to use tasers. tonight's meeting begins at 6:00 at the hamilton recreation center. the hunt is on for thieves that stole a dozen cars from an east bay dealership. those thieves broke open the locked gate at auto world in hayward at about 2:00 yesterday morning. they then broke into the office and found the keys to all of the cars. police say surveillance video shows about four to five people were involved in this heist. the stolen vehicles are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. it was a big hit. they include audis, jaguars,

measur mercedes and bmws. robbers targeted an elderly couple during a home invasion. it happened last night at a home in 6700 block of bret harte drive. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live in san jose with the latest on this investigation. good morning, arturo. >> reporter: good morning, marla. at this point any sign of police activity has ended hours ago. there are sure to be lingering effects on this neighborhood throughout the day. as you mentioned, we're not far from leyland high school, about a block away. last night three men broke into the home of an elderly couple in the 6700 block of bret harte drive. they drove off in two of the victims' cars. one of the victims was able to break free and get to a neighbor's home and call for help. nbc bay area talked to a woman who lived in the neighborhood

for 16 years and she says she's never seen this kind of crime in the area. >> freaked me out and scared me. i think like everyone it's not the type of thing that we expect and i don't know how they profiled or how they were chosen and that's frightening. >> nerves are shot. they are shocked. but they are holding up pretty well. >> reporter: police are looking for the couple's cars. one is a 1997 tan toyota camry with license played 3ung690 and other is a green high land land. the couple is okay and police are trying to track down the armed suspects. in piedmont police trying to

determine if a pair of home invasion robberies are linked. police looking for at least three suspects who targeted a home on estates drive before 6:30 yesterday morning. it is believed that same group then hit another house about 20 minutes later near arroya avenue and york drive. during that robbery one of the suspects shot at a victim but fortunately missed. nobody was hurt in either of the home invasions. police say suspects took off in a newer model silver or gray suv which may have some damage on its left front end. 49ers season ticket holders will find out today if they won the lottery. in this case that means the option to buy tickets to the super bowl. the team will e-mail the locuck winners as early as this morning. some question whether they are winning anything since the cheapest tickets to the game are estimated to be about $2,000. and then once you get the tickets, you still have to get to the game which is in new orleans and then find a place to stay. southwest has virtually sold out

welcome back. it's 5:13. google is going to talk more about plans to expand in mountain view today. the tech company will provide the mountain view city council with an update on the new construction slated for the north bay shore area. the presentation is expected to cover sustainability, transportation and the environment. google is also expected to talk about its bay view project. today's meeting is open to the public and begins at 5:00 at the council chambers. google will open books to investors a few hours before that meeting. scott mcgrew says that's not a coinciden coincidence. >> companies don't say much before they release quarterly

profits. it's called the quiet period for a reason. that's why google chose tonight's city council meeting to show off the plans that comes after the release of the numbers. we have to reach all of the way back to friday to get google's opening price on the stock market. markets were closed monday for dr. king's birthday. now, the monster financial report is wednesday. that's when apple opens its books. apple still the most valuable publicly traded company in the world but it's had a very difficult time lately. bloomberg speculating apple may see a decrease in its profit quarter to quarter. that hasn't happened in ten years. so back to work for wall street today. back to work for kayla tausche. she's live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, kayla. >> good tuesday morning to you, scott. we have futures in the market that are mixed this morning as investors return from the holiday weekend. markets are coming off the third straight week of gains at the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 sitting

at five-year highs. google and ibm will announce this afternoon. dow rising 53 points on friday. nasdaq slipping one to 3134. southwest is joining the list of airlines adding a few extra fees. 40 bucks for passengers who want to be the first to board their flight. the fee guarantees you'll be one of the first 15 people in line so you can choose your seat and stow your carry-on bags before anyone else. southwest already charges $10 for early bird check in service but the new boarding option can be purchased at the gate up to 45 minutes before your flight. scott, back over to you. >> all right. thank you much. i hate it when people catch onto that. ten bucks on southwest. you don't have to stand in line at all and now 40 bucks. i love paying the ten bucks. i seem to be the only person that did it.

pattern resumes sunday into monday dependent on how far south that jet stream stays over the course of the weekend. we'll track that for you. here he is as promised. mike inouye. >> good morning. i want to show you i swung the camera around. here's north 101 under 680/280 interchange. over here off in the distance is the approach and it looks like there's a set of lights that haven't moved much in the last ten minutes. that may very well be where that disabled bus is reported. chp now tells me they are putting out flares on the approach. slow lane blocked north 101 toward 680/280 interchange along the connector heading toward 680 north through the east bay. we'll show you the maps. this is what we're talking about here. up north 101 approaching the camera transition to north 680 is the area that may be affected as far as traffic flow by the flares and disabled bus in the area. we do have typically your christmas tree there getting on north 880 and road crew. other than that, south bay is

just fine. palo alto smooth drive for 101 and no delays up or down the peninsula. northbound with taillights. other side of the bay, oakland looks fine coming up north from san mateo bridge through downtown. light flow of traffic and bay bridge of course still light for now. it's traffic tuesday. back to you. >> okay. thanks so much. 5:19. 90% of ski resorts have them and more could be done to make them safe. we're talking about terrain parks. you may have seen them. they are like ski parks but in the snow. investigative reporter found these parks are built with no safety standards. >> reporter: these parks are a huge draw for snowboarders and skiers of all ages and have grown in popularity alongside big events like the x games. as the sport has taken off, there's little oversight on how they are designed. >> there isn't any design really. >> reporter: an expert witness has testified in several lawsuits against various ski resorts. he's also a professor of

mechanical engineering at uc davis. a recent study presented at a conference organized by the international society for skiing safety found the rate of spine and head injuries at terrain parks is double that compared to other areas at a resort. the key to preventing serious accidents is calculating the distance from the jump to the landing. >> basically it accommodates for any place you want to land and it makes it so that you land equally softly everywhere. >> any mathematical equation go into it? >> no. >> chris has been at the center of the craze since it began two decades ago. his company snow park technologies is responsible for dreaming up and constructing the jumps for the x games and the dew tour. he's also building terrain parks at ski areas all over the area in northern california that includes places like north star,

the nation's high school graduation rate is the highest it's been since 1976. about 78% of students are graduating on time. education secretary arne duncan says in a struggling economy there's more competition for jobs which means kids feel a high school diploma is even more important. fire officials right now are trying to reassure east bay residents they are still safe following a series of recent firestation closures. contra costa county fire officials holding the latest in a series of community meetings. this one is in walnut creek. officials planning to discuss the closure of firestation 4 and how services will be impacted there. the meeting set to start tonight at 7:00 at the walnut heights elementary school. a total of four stations in walnut creek, clayton and lafayette will be shut down as part of a countywide plan to trim a $17 million budget gap. work is set to start this morning on a section of the bay

bridge damaged when it was hit by an oil tanker earlier this month. caltrans now planning to replace fenders on the western tower that was sideswiped back on january 7th. officials say the pier itself is okay because the fenders did exactly what they're supposed to do and absorbed that damage. the repair work expected to last a total of 4.5 months and could cost as much as $3 million. >> good morning to you. it's 5:25. hope you are bundled up in bed nice and warm. let's look at how cold it is outside with mislors. christina loren. >> a lot of people heading back for an abbreviated workweek. temperatures today will be a lot more comfortable. a lot more bearable than we expect over the course of the next few days. enjoy 68 degrees inland today. bayside 66 degrees. 65 at the coast. rain on the way as of tomorrow. we'll time out the storm system to your doorstep coming up.

good morning. thanks for being with us. it's 5:30. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. right now we have the latest on a developing story that i think you will take. >> we've been following this developing story all night. mr. police in oakland have spent more than ten hours on the hunt for two suspects accused of shooting a police officer. the shooting happened on seminary avenue and 17th street not far from the oakland coliseum. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us with more on what's been a door to door search so far. >> reporter: this stretch of seminary avenue behind crime scene tape and on lockdown. i spoke with a sergeant who says the door to door searching is over but there's a s.w.a.t. vehicle out there large and dark in the background. they are gathering evidence and seem to be focusing on an apartment building on the corner. one man detained. two others still loose this morning after an undercover oakland police officer sitting

in a car was shot in the arm. that happened just before 6:30 last night. that officer was investigating a shooting that happened sunday when three men accosted him. that set off a massive manhunt overnight. the neighborhood on lockdown as chp helicopters were brought out and s.w.a.t. teams searched door to door for the men. one person taken into custody. that person was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to recover and the shooting happened as oakland's police department, the city, facing a rise in violent crime. the city council considering approving a $250,000 security contractor to come in. i'll have more on what the city council has to decide coming up in the next half hour. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." new video just into our newsroom of damage caused by an

early morning fire in a furniture store in fremont. firefighters say a couch caught on fire inside the factory furniture outlet overnight. the building's sprinkler system came on and kept the fire from spreading. a lot of smoke throughout that building is a problem and likely a lot of water damage. we are happy to report nobody was hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. brentwood police on the hunt for suspects involved in a drive-by shooting that injured four teenagers. they range in age from 13 to 16. they were all shot last night around 6:00 near a home on breton drive. the teens were standing on a sidewalk when three suspects inside a car opened fire. all four teens are said to have serious injuries but they are expected to survive. police say the car is described as a white or light colored late model four-door sedan. no word on a motive for the shooting or any kind of suspect

description. it's the kind of crime that puts everybody on edge. last night it happened in one of the south bay's safest neighborhoods. we're talking about a home invasion robbery that targeted an elderly couple. this one happened at a home in the 6700 block of bret harte drive very close to leyland high school and that's where "today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live right now in san jose. he has the latest on this ongoing investigation. arturo, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we are about a block away from leyland high school. for the people who are familiar with this area, they know it to be an extremely quiet part of suburbia which is why this crime is hitting this neighborhood so very hard. three armed men broke into a home of an elderly couple and tied the couple up and then proceed to ransack their home, steal a number of items from the house, and then the suspects drove off in both cars belonging

to the victims. eventually one of those victims was able to get themselves free and get to a neighbor's home and call for help. at last word the couple is doing okay. police are trying to track down those stolen cars. one is a 1997 tan toyota camera. license plate is 3ung960. the other is a 2012 green toyota highlander. that car has a license plate of 5xiu520. if you have any information on the stolen cars or on the break-in itself, you are asked to call the san jose police department. live in san jose, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." it is 5:34. lucky niners fans will find out as soon as this morning if they'll be in the stadium during the team's quest for a sixth world title. we're talking about 49ers season ticket holders waiting for an e-mail today telling them if they are eligible to purchase

a nonstop adventure in washington d.c. president obama and vice president biden taking part in a national prayer service. religious leaders from across the country will deliver readings, blessings and hymns. after that the president and vice president will officially be tackling their second term. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill where the first item on that agenda is now dealing with america's debt. let the good times roll. >> reporter: the work begins again today and the debt was an issue before the inauguration and it still is an issue hanging over congress' head and president's head. he talked yesterday in his inaugural address about the annual deficit and dealing with that and health care costs and trying to bring those down. there's a vote scheduled in the house tomorrow that would allow us to raise the debt ceiling. republicans said they didn't want to do that without cutting

back spending. the president didn't want the two linked and republicans apparently have relinquished that threat and pushed for the raising the debt ceiling temporarily into the spring to pay bills. they also say if either chamber doesn't come up with a permanent budget, that chamber, either the house or senate, the lawmakers won't get paid. we'll see how that vote goes later today. the president laid out a number of things including climate change, gay rights, health care immigration, and it remains to be seen how much of that they will be able to tackle in the second term. >> he better eat his wheaties. time to get done. thank you very much. happening now, fire crews are battling to contain a fire at beale air force base about 50 miles north of sacramento. the fire has been burning for hours. this is what it looked like just last night. firefighters say they now have the fire about 75% contained. it broke out about 2:30 yesterday afternoon inside a building on that base. one person was inside at the

in 2009. the allegations led to closure of the lab and forced prosecutors to dismiss hundreds of criminal cases. in palo alto, children's hospital is now notifying 57,000 patients that a laptop containing their personal information was stolen. the hospital says the laptop was taken from a physician's car on the night of january 9th. while it contains information about past care and research involving patients, it was password protected. the hospital says there's no indication the information has been accessed or compromised. the hospital in the meantime is sending letters to affected patients. a gated senior community in san jose east foothills has a plans to deal with a growing deer problem. officials say the deer population has gotten out of control and some of the deer are starting to get very aggressive toward humans. a community spokesman says working with wildlife officials

google's next best thing. google co-founder caught on camera taking a company prototype out for a test run. it shows him wearing the google glasses on a new york subway. the glasses are said to have the same capability as your smartphone. the user can see data on the tiny screen located in those frames. actually a tough time seeing anything you want to look at besides that. they don't expect the glasses to be available for a few years. the estimated cost $1,500. calling all wine lovers. that bargain beverage two buck chuck will now cost you an extra 50 cents. trader joe's upped the price to 2.50 a bottle. they offered the wine for affordable 1.99 until last week the cost of doing business forced the retailer to raise the price.

groupon is ending deals with shooting ranges and other gun related businesses. this decision apparently going all of the way to the top. >> good morning to you. the ceo of the company called for the end of those deals according to some reports, jon. groupon won't confirm that but does say deals with shooting ranges and gun safety education classes, clay pigeon classes, shotgun parks, no longer available on the site. a number of businesses distanced themselves from gun related incidents following the tragedy at sandy hook. other pensions sold its investment in gun manufacturers sort ll lly after the shooting. this wasn't entirely ethics at play. if a nationwide assault weapons ban does come, maker of assault weapons will not be a very good investment. wall street looking for a
